Whether you're a new NDIS participant or have been in a plan, you would likely have been exposed to the term 'Reasonable and Necessary'. In this week's blog, we explore what defines 'Reasonable & Necessary', how it impacts you and your plans with the NDIS.
Reasonable is something that is deemed fair, and necessary is something that you require because of your disability. Yet it can be a little more complicated than that. Over the years, we've heard time and time again from distraught participants unable to solicit funding for supports that seem undoubtedly aligned with their medical history, occupational therapist assessments or behaviour reports. The truth is the NDIS will not take any action - unless, they meet the six key standards of being 'reasonable and necessary' outlined in the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013.
For a support to be considered 'Reasonable and Necessary' NDIS applies the six following points;

1. Help the participant pursue the goals, objectives and aspirations consented to in their
2. Assist/Increase the participant's social and economic participation.
3. Be considered value for money.
4. Be, or likely to be, practical and beneficial for the participant
5. Take into account what is reasonable to expect families, carer's, informal networks and
the community to provide.
6. Be appropriate for the NDIS to fund or implement.
